Smart Lock Buying Guide - Bluetooth, Z-Wave or Wi-Fi

Author:Jake | TIME:December 19,2017

Not sure if your house door is locked or worrying that someone might break in while you are not home? Then you may consider to upgrade to a connected lock. A smart lock grants you more control by enabling you to lock and unlock your door anytime and anywhere, even you are thousands of miles away from home.

Smart locks do not actually make your home any safer when someone tries to break in your house; however, they help save you many troubles and inconvenience. Imagine that after you get into your bed in the cold winter night but start wondering if you have locked the door. You need to get off the warm bed and go downstairs to check the lock. But if it were the smart lock, you just need to operate it on your smartphone.

A smart lock communicates with the rest of your smart home setup or smartphone. Most smart locks now use one of the three common communication protocols: Bluetooth, Z-Wave and Wi-Fi. And below we will give a brief introduction of each of these smart lock types.

Bluetooth

One of the advantages of a Bluetooth door lock is that it doesn't consume battery life as quickly as Wi-Fi does. In general, with Bluetooth, the lock battery should be able to run at least one year. However, compared with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth has an obvious drawback - it can be controlled within a roughly 300 feet, which means you will lose control when you are far away from home.

Z-Wave

Rather than connect with your mobile phone directly, Z-Wave locks require you to connect to a Z-Wave-compatible hub that translates the lock's Z-Wave signal into something your router can read. Once it does, you can connect with your lock remotely. And the range could reach up to 120 feet. The disadvantage? It requires an additional hub to talk to Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi is an optional add-on with select models, for example, the August smart lock. Once the lock is plugged into a power outlet, it will bridge the connection between the Bluetooth August lock and your home Wi-Fi network. Once that matches, you are able to control the smart lock from anywhere as long as you're connected to the Internet.
