If you work at a warehouse, retail store or shipping facility, then you may need to print a large volume of labels on a daily basis. Whether you need to add product information or shipping details and barcodes, a label printer can help you print out labels on sticky papers that you can paste directly anywhere, for instant, the packing box.

There are different types of label printers available to choose, and the most commonly used label printing machine should be the thermal label printer. And the reason why thermal label printers are so popular is that they do not need you to add any ink toner or cartridge. Instead, the thermal print technology prints directly on special labels made of thermochromic papers, which means your only work with label printing is replace the label roll when the paper runs out.

Out there in the market, you can easily find different label printer brands and models, for example, Dymo label printer, Zebra label printer and Brother label printer. So which is the best, or how to choose the right thermal label printer? Here are some tips for you:

1 Print Method

There are three types of thermal barcode label printer technology: direct thermal, thermal transfer, and ink jet.

Direct thermal printing applies heat directly to a specially coated label to activate the ink on it and produce the image, usually in black but a second color option is available. No ink, toner, or ribbon is required.

Thermal transfer printing applies heat from the print head to the thermal transfer ribbon, which is coated with wax, resin, or a combination of both. The heat melts the coating and transfers the image to the paper.

Ink jet printing puts tiny dots of ink to create the image. The dots are approximately 50 to 60 microns in diameter, thinner than a human hair.

2 Print resolution

Most thermal label printers should not have problem in printing words or numbers; however, not all of them are capable of printing distinct barcodes. The barcode symbology is composed of a series of bar of different widths, so it needs to be printed in high resolution. Otherwise, it cannot be scanned or read by scanners. The resolution is measured in dots per inch (dpi) and there are 203 dpi, 300 dpi and 600 dpi available. The larger the number, the better solution it will be.

3 Print volume

Print volume is a big matter if you need to print a heavy volume of labels. You can check this while choosing a thermal label printer. Some printers can deal with large volume and they are normally more expensive. But they are worth the price because they can keep up your demand of high print speed.

4 Maximum label size

In general, a small printer is able to handle labels of up to four inches in width. But if you want to print wider labels, you will need to think about larger machines.
